GAL Hassin – International Center for Astronomical Sciences is an astronomical park and research centre located in Isnello, in the heart of the Madonie Natural Park. It is one of the most advanced scientific facilities in Southern Italy and an international reference point for sky observation.
The name “GAL Hassin” is a linguistic play that recalls the word “galaxy,” while also reflecting the area’s history: “Hassin” was the name given to Isnello during the Arab period and means “cold stream.” The centre’s location is no coincidence: the area benefits from exceptionally clear skies, far from light pollution, creating ideal conditions for astronomical observation.
The complex functions both as a research centre and a public educational space. Inside, you’ll find the planetarium, the heart of the visitor experience, along with educational laboratories dedicated to physics and solar observation, as well as the GAL Hassin Museum, which retraces the history of astronomy.
The facility also includes an equipped observation terrace with various instruments, a radio telescope, and outdoor spaces dedicated to science education. The entire experience is designed to engage both enthusiasts and casual visitors, adults and children alike.
The project has also had a strong symbolic impact: in 2009, asteroid 6168 was officially named “Isnello,” further enhancing the international visibility of both the village and the astronomical centre.
Today, GAL Hassin is one of the most complete scientific experiences in the region — a place where education, research, and direct observation come together, offering an immediate connection with the universe and the skies of the Madonie.
