Excursion to the Aeolian Islands

Lipari, Vulcano, Salina, Stromboli, Filicudi, Alicudi, and Panarea: seven extraordinary islands rising from the Mediterranean Sea, forming one of the most fascinating archipelagos in Italy — the Aeolian Islands.

This full-day excursion takes you to a truly unique destination where nature reigns supreme, and where the elements — water, fire, and wind — have shaped dramatic coastlines, mountains, and landscapes, also influencing the culture and way of life of the local communities over time.

The Aeolian Islands were formed by intense volcanic activity that began around 700,000 years ago, when underwater eruptions gave rise to the islands we see today. Among them, Stromboli stands out as one of the most active volcanoes in the world: its frequent eruptions create breathtaking scenery, especially at sunset, offering an unforgettable natural spectacle.

Beyond their extraordinary landscapes, the Aeolian Islands are also synonymous with relaxation and leisure. Beaches, hidden coves, sea caves, cliffs, sea stacks, and vibrant marine life make the archipelago perfect for sea lovers and outdoor activities. Charming villages and small towns add to the appeal, ideal for wandering through narrow streets, scenic viewpoints, and local traditions.

The islands are also rich in myths and legends. According to tradition, their name comes from Aeolus, the mythical ruler of the winds, who is said to have lived here and predicted weather changes by observing the vapours rising from the volcanoes. During the Early Middle Ages, Lipari became an important pilgrimage site, leading to the establishment of monasteries and dioceses and contributing to the region’s agricultural and social revival.

Since December 2000, the Aeolian Islands have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognised as one of the most important examples of a volcanic archipelago in the world and a key reference point for international volcanology studies.
